These wonderful meters were manufactured from 1977-1984, with one little flaw: the liquid crystal displays failed quickly.
The Fluke company stood behind them and offered redesigned replacements for a nominal price for years, but not forever.

If you have excellent fine motor skills and plenty of time, this page shows how to replace the blurry or totally dark display.

So I did that. For my friends who have just received a shiny new 40-year-old meter, here is the documentation:

Just don't forget the most important rule for multimeters: never leave the leads in the current measuring position when you're finished. (don't ask me how I know.)
